Need a hardcore cleaner product

Ok, so I have never bothered to detail my car. It's got a good 6 years or so of grime and crap on everything now. Mostly dirt and general hand grime and what not. The steering wheel, the shifter knob, the turn signal stick/cruise control button. On really really humid days, the crap just rubs off on my hands. It's gross, I'll admit it. On most other days though, it's something I have to kind of scrape at with my fingernail to get through it.
So, my question is, aside from sandblasting and hydrochloric acid, whats a good way to get the bulk of the gross stuff lifted off first? Is it as simple as LOTS of rags with warm soap and water on them? Or is there a great cleaning chemical I can use first?

Buuuuuut if you wanna keep the paint then I would second the simple green
